Before we can quote for a stair lift, we need to see the stairs. The visit is free and usually takes less than an hour. Here is what happens.
We measure the staircase
We record the length of the flight, the width of the stairs, the height and depth of the steps, and the space at the top and bottom. We also note anything close to the stairs, such as a doorway, a radiator or a window sill.
We ask about the rider
Who will use the lift, how do they manage sitting and standing, and which side of the stairs is easier for them? Weight and height help us choose between the compact Indy Pinnacle and the higher-capacity Indy XL.
We look at power
The lift runs on batteries that charge when the chair is parked. We check for an outlet near the top or bottom of the stairs.
We talk through the options
For example, a folding rail where a door is close to the bottom step, and where the chair should park when it is not in use.
How to prepare
- Clear the stairs so that we can measure.
- If possible, have the person who will ride the lift at home.
- Invite a family member who helps with decisions.
- Write down your questions in advance.
After the visit
You receive a written quote. If you go ahead, a straight stair lift can usually be installed within days, in a few hours, with the rail fixed to the stair treads and no work to the walls.
If a stair lift is not right
We will say so. Someone who uses a wheelchair may be better served by a wheelchair lift or a home elevator, and we can explain those during the same visit.
